Hi, I’m Tracie. I’m a volunteer for Girls in Tech and CEO of Serinus Security, a security start-up.

Serinus tells you when the WiFi you are using is being hacked, wherever you are. You can take it with you wherever you go so you know when your WiFi at home, in the office, or any public WiFi network, is being hacked.

We were recently selected for the Startmate 2018 Melbourne cohort. Startmate is Australia’s leading technology accelerator and it’s ranked as one of the top 5 in the world, so you can imagine how excited we were to get in!

Almost 300 start-ups applied, and, of those, 30 were selected for Interview Day, where we had 10 minutes to pitch our product to 15 mentors – it was like business speed-dating! When we found out we were in the 15 start-ups selected for further in-depth interviews we were so excited, and when the final selection was made and we got in, we couldn’t believe it (so happy)!

So now we’re a third of the way through the Startmate program and we’re working with amazing companies doing amazing things, like automating legal advice using AI, delivering medical supplies using drones and developing flying taxis!

The road to Startmate for me has been a long one – starting as a Business Analyst at a large multi-national, consulting as a technical writer, managing a security consulting and software company and now start-up CEO (and having a couple of kids along the way). Now I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be – fully in charge of my own destiny and doing something really exciting that I’m passionate about.

I guess if I could give you a little advice, it would be this – think about what you want to do and then work out a plan to achieve it. Don’t limit yourself with your thinking or roles – plenty of people will try to do that for you! I’ve been told that I’m not as good as I think I am. I’ve been told that anyone could do my job and I could be replaced tomorrow (in front of a subordinate). And I’ve also been told that I can do anything I put my mind to. That’s what I choose to believe, and that’s what I say to you. Believe in yourself and your dream, develop a plan and stick to it – and you’ll get there in the end.
